Seasonal affective disorder

He was diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago, on meds for a while then we just ignored the problem thinking it would go away. Three years ago I left after a very bad manic episode and he would not seek any professional help. When I said I was leaving it turned into an even worse episode that landed him in jail for a DUI I think he was trying to kill himself with the use of the car. I left for two months and he did everything right. Got help, swore he would stay on meds, let me have my freedom, etc. I thought I had to give it another shot for the man I loved, our dogs, cat and the life we had built together. I returned and we went to counseling and he saw his own doctor. They put him on Lithium and I started to think we may make it after all. I started to let my guard down and started trusting him again to be the man I thought I had married. Then slowly the bizarre well familiar to me and controlling behavior started to creep into our lives.

Less intense manic phases Jil, a year-old from Mississippi, first experienced symptoms of bipolar disorder depressed mood, insomnia , excess energy in high school. When she was 16, her doctor diagnosed her with major depression and prescribed the antidepressant sertraline then known by its brand name, Zoloft. When Im manic I dont sleep and sometimes spend money when I know I shouldnt, but mainly I am very productive and mean as a hornet.

I used to cycle rapidly, but medications have slowed things down a lot, so I dont have ups and downs as frequently as I did before. The age at which she was diagnosed, for instance: Most people with bipolar disorder have their first manic episodes in their 20s or 30s, and research suggests that women tend to develop symptoms of the disorder three to five years later than men, on average. Why women are underdiagnosed [ pagebreak ]In other ways, Jils story is all too typical. One of the reasons that bipolar disorder may be underdiagnosed in women is that the milder form of mania that Jil experiences appears to be more common in women.

Although each case of bipolar disorder falls on a spectrum, rather than into neat categories, two main types of the disorder have been identified. Bipolar II disorder features a more moderate form of mania known as hypomania, which is easier to mistake for an ordinary mood swing. While the prevalence of bipolar I is roughly the same among men and women, it has been suggested that bipolar II appears more often in the latter. Rapid cycling, in which four or more episodes of mania or depression occur in a year, is also thought to be more common among women, perhaps because it is more closely associated with bipolar II.

The same is true of so-called mixed mania, in which manic and depressive symptoms occur simultaneously. Bipolar symptoms in women may overlie a baseline demonstrative mood and temperament, and this may in part explain their increased prevalence of mixed mania,” says Dr.

Romance and bipolar The mood swings associated with bipolar disorder can cause extreme changes in behavior. During manic episodes, a person with bipolar disorder can have an unusual amount of energy and may not be able to sleep. When experiencing depressive episodes, a person with bipolar disorder can seem tired and sad. They may not want to go out or do things. These major shifts in mood can make communicating and socializing difficult.

Self Help for Bipolar Disorder Self help for bipolar disorder is often overlooked in favor of pharmaceutical treatment based on the medical model. Self help for bipolar disorder can be effective. Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions are treated as another possible symptom. Mild degrees of dysthymia may result in people withdrawing from stress and avoiding opportunities for failure. In more severe cases of dysthymia, people may even withdraw from daily activities. Diagnosis of dysthymia can be difficult because of the subtle nature of the symptoms and patients can often hide them in social situations, making it challenging for others to detect symptoms.

Additionally, dysthymia often occurs at the same time as other psychological disorders, which adds a level of complexity in determining the presence of dysthymia, particularly because there is often an overlap in the symptoms of disorders. Suicidal behavior is also a particular problem with persons with dysthymia. It is vital to look for signs of major depression, panic disorder , generalised anxiety disorder , alcohol and substance misuse and personality disorder.

This provides support for the idea that dysthymia is in part caused by heredity.

Bipolar Disorder and Neurochemistry The brain uses a number of chemicals as messengers to communicate with other parts of the brain and nervous system. These chemical messengers, known as neurotransmitters, are essential to all of the brain’s functions. Since they are messengers, they typically come from one place and go to another to deliver their messages. Where one neuron or nerve cell ends, another one begins.

In between two linked neurons is a tiny space or gap called a synapse. In a simple scenario, one cell sends a neurotransmitter message across this synaptic junction and the next cell receives the signal by catching the messenger chemical as it floats across the synapse in a receptor structure.

For people with bipolar disorder dating can become quite a struggle. Many bipolar singles are scared to tell about their condition to others. It causes too much stress and anxiety just to go on a first date.

If you met Jordan, you might be surprised to learn that the teen has bipolar disorder. President of his senior class and lead actor in the school play, Jordan is outgoing, popular, and a high achiever. But that wasn’t always the case. When Jordan turned 16, his mood suddenly changed. He felt irritable, angry, and extremely fatigued. When he wasn’t at school, he locked himself in his bedroom, sleeping all afternoon or playing “dark” video games.

His parents noticed the dramatic change and realized that it was more than an adolescent mood swing. Jordan needed medical intervention. He and his parents talked to a psychiatrist, a doctor who specializes in treating bipolar and other mood disorders. They discussed Jordan’s recent mood swings, along with his increased need for sleep , his temper fits, and his desire to be alone all the time.

Jordan talked openly about his feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and worthlessness.

Recognizing Bipolar Disorder Symptoms and Getting a Diagnosis There are different types of bipolar disorder, with different corresponding symptoms. Bipolar I is marked by at least one manic episode, and the vast majority of people with bipolar I also experience major depressive episodes. Bipolar II is characterized by a major depressive episode as well as an episode of hypomania which is less severe than full mania and in-between periods of a stable mood.

With cyclothymia , a milder form of bipolar disorder, less severe hypomanic and depressive episodes alternate for at least two years. For an episode to be considered manic, it must cause severe impairment or hospitalization or include some psychotic features. A hypomanic episode is similar but is not as intense or disabling and is shorter in duration, lasting at least four days.

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, affects men and women equally, with about million adult Americans ( percent of the population) diagnosed with the condition.

Please choose a bipolar chat room that is private, safe and free! An online chat room can be a great outlet and a great source of bipolar support although adult chat is unwise during manic phases. Unfortunately however, many of the online chat rooms that promote themselves to bipolar people have other agendas — for example lots of advertising and selling, or adult chat that fuels bipolar symptoms, leading to bipolar mania or even infidelity.

The chat rooms suggested here are online chat rooms I personally prefer because they are genuinely run for the benefit of the bipolar community, and do not encourage adult chat. These are independent sites that have no connection with www. Please be careful and do not use your full name or share any identifying information.

What Dating with Bipolar Really Feels Like When you’re dating with bipolar you have a whole other challenge on your hands. Here’s what I’ve learned from my experience jumping into the dating world Article by: Hannah Blum Dating during your twenties is an experience in itself, but when you live with a severely stigmatized condition like bipolar disorder, dating can really be a challenge.

As a year-old mental health advocate who is publicly open about her life with bipolar II disorder, I have often experienced stigma in my dating life. Bipolar disorder is a part of me, and I am not ashamed of my condition, in fact, it is the opposite, I embrace it. However, dating—when you live with a mental health condition—can be complicated: When should you tell your date about your diagnosis?

Should you even tell them at all? Will they think of you differently once they know? You have self-doubt, you question yourself, and mainly you assume you are the underdog in romantic relationships. When I accepted my diagnosis and life with bipolar disorder, I finally found my confident self, but I had to overcome some obstacles to get there.
