Entrepreneurs pitch their startups as the next Uber, the next Facebook, or the next Airbnb, while executives in established companies are retooling their strategies around platforms to drive growth and compete digitally. But creating a successful platform business is not easy, as economists Richard Schmalensee and David S. Evans will tell you. Schmalensee and Evans have studied multisided platforms — in other words, businesses that create value by connecting two or more sets of participants via a physical or virtual platform — for more than a decade. Their most recent book for executives, Matchmakers: The entrepreneur has to solve a tough puzzle and use counterintuitive strategies to make a go of it. Mangelsdorf spoke with Schmalensee and Evans to learn more about just what it takes to get a platform strategy right. What follows is an edited and condensed version of their conversation.

Tweet The peer-to-peer business model works on the premise of playing matchmaker between individuals with a service to offer and others who could use that service. We look specifically at Lyft, a company that helps individuals who need a ride match up with people who have a car and want to earn a few bucks by giving them rides. Is there an opportunity for your organization to leverage matchmaking among your customers to fulfill their needs and to generate some revenue?

A peer-to-peer business is one where consumers can buy and sell products and services to one another. Economies of scale, making really big purchases and doing big things like ensuring investments, standards of quality, recourse, brand promise.

BBVA has launched a match-making platform that helps fintech startups get in touch with business units at the Spanish bank that might benefit from their products and services. The Open Marketplace.

Through this partnership, all Celcom Business customers will enjoy exclusive benefits such as preferential rates on Koble packages and tailored campaigns. The announcement also comes after Xpand, an enterprise solutions and IoT business of Axiata Group, signed an exclusive licensing agreement in August this year to offer SMEs and larger enterprises in Asia with a digital matchmaking service. The Koble platform combines social networking with anonymous and AI-powered matchmaking to improve relationship management for both qualified buyers and sellers looking to grow their businesses.

According to the press statement, it eliminates the friction of B2B buying and selling online, by blending consumer networking for faster adoption with the requirements businesses need, such as authenticity and privacy. As a result, it makes it easier for businesses to meet for mutually beneficial conversations by removing issues such as wasted resources from time spent searching and high marketing cost.

Members of the Koble network also have access to free and premium features including targeting, anonymous chat and peer performance comparisons, among others.

Chinese, Hindu, and Jewish cultures have institutionalized the role for several millennia. At different points in time, talented matchmakers have held positions of status, and with good reason. By connecting people for romantic or other reasons, an intermediary can dramatically expedite the connection process, decrease search costs, and help individuals find better matches than they could on their own. Both require an organizer to make interaction possible, but in centralized ecosystems, such as those run by a matchmaker, the organizer actively manages interactions and connects participants for specific purposes.

In decentralized ecosystems, participants are left to govern themselves. Your local bar is a good example of a decentralized ecosystem:

The framework presented in this piece is foundational to my work on Platform Thinking and will be referenced in some of the subsequent posts. Build a better platform, and you will have a decided advantage over the competition.

In construction, a platform is something that lifts you up and on which others can stand. The same is true in business. By building a digital platform, other businesses can easily connect their business with yours, build products and services on top of it, and co-create value. Consider the market for smartphones. Nokia and Blackberry today are a shadow of their former glory. Their technology and products lag Apple and the Android ecosystem.

But the triumph of Apple and Android is not from features and functions. It is from the app store on which external developers create value. Microsoft has gotten excellent reviews for the technology in its new phones, but it is the ability to create a successful platform that will determine its ultimate success.

Practice[ edit ] Advertisement for a matchmaking service Chennai , India In some cultures, the role of the matchmaker was and is quite professionalized. The Ashkenazi Jewish shadchan , or the Hindu astrologer , were often thought to be essential advisors and also helped in finding right spouses as they had links and a relation of good faith with the families.

In cultures where arranged marriages were the rule, the astrologer often claimed that the stars sanctified matches that both parents approved of, making it quite difficult for the possibly-hesitant children to easily object — and also making it easy for the astrologer to collect his fee. However, when farming families were widely separated and kept all children on the farm working, marriage-age children could often only meet in church or in such mandated social events.

The Future of Business Matchmaking By Aman Baboolal and Justine White 24 May How a new green business facility in South Africa is connecting local companies to the global green economy Traditional trade mission functions are becoming obsolete. Over hors d’oeuvres, business cards are exchanged, elevator pitches are delivered but, in most cases, entrepreneurs leave with empty promises to stay in touch and no useful contacts.

The reasons for business matchmaking have not changed much either. In South Africa, green small and growing businesses are often under-resourced or inexperienced when attempting to access the global assets required to build a competitive advantage. The traditional matchmaking provided through trade missions is not focused at the firm level; there is no trusted intermediary to play the facilitation role, and private consultants are unaffordable. Where would one start?
